A music school built around one idea.
Most music teaching is organized around correctness — right notes, right rhythm, right fingering. Those things matter, and they are also the part a metronome and a patient hour can fix.
What they do not produce on their own is a performance anybody wants to listen to. The shaping does that: knowing where to breathe, where to lean in, where to let something sit. We built the academy around teaching that from the first lesson rather than saving it for the students who last five years.

Rory has taught music for more than twenty years and is the music director at Faith Presbyterian Church in Sun City, where he runs the choir and plays for the Sunday service.
In 2026 his student Freya Terris, then seventeen, became the first one-handed pianist to pass Grade 8 with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in the board’s near-140-year history. She had lost the use of her right hand after surgery and spent more than a year relearning the instrument with her left, taught online across a seven-hour time difference. The story was covered by FOX 10 Phoenix, ABC15 Arizona and the BBC.
He founded the academy to bring the same teaching to Sun City in person.

Most of our students are adults over fifty-five, and a good number have never had a music lesson before. That’s not a coincidence — learning an instrument or finding your voice gives you something a lot of other hobbies don’t: a reason to concentrate, a reason to practice a small physical skill, and a reason to show up and see the same people every week.
Researchers who study healthy aging keep coming back to the same themes — music learning engages memory, coordination and focus all at once, and regular social contact is one of the best-documented supports for mood and wellbeing later in life. We’re not going to promise you a cure for anything. What we see, week after week, is people who came in a little unsure of themselves and left with something to look forward to.
None of that requires starting young. Adult beginners already know what they want to sound like, which means lessons can move faster than you might expect.
A lot of Sun City is only here part of the year, so lessons are built to flex around that. If you head north or out of state for the summer, your lessons don’t have to stop — we can continue over video call for the weeks you’re away, then pick back up in person at Faith Presbyterian Church as soon as you’re back. Rory has taught this way before, including coaching a student through a Grade 8 piano exam across a seven-hour time difference.

The academy rents teaching space at Faith Presbyterian Church. It is open to everyone — students do not need to be members of the church, or of any church, and lessons carry no religious requirement.
What the building gives us is unusual for a music school: a proper choir room, a comfortable waiting area, free level parking, and a sanctuary with a Steinway grand and room for a thousand people, which is where our performances happen.
